For the rest of this week, we will be focusing on diary entries where our aim is to write a diary entry from the point of view of one of the characters from The City of Ember.

 

First, we need to think about what makes a good diary entry and learn what features are used within diary writing.

 

TASK 1: READ THE DIARY ENTRY

Choose one of the diary entries below. Read it and think about what makes it a diary entry. How is this different to a story?

TASK 2: DIARY FEATURES

Now that you have read the diary and thought it's purpose, think about what features are used within a diary entry. If you can, print out the diary and annotate the features using different coloured pens.

For example:

Diaries are written in past tense so you may highlight all examples of 'past tense' in blue and show this in a key underneath.
