Phonics in Year One

Please find below what happens in Year One phonics.

Each day the pupils have a dedicated twenty minute phonics lesson. During these lessons they learn new sounds and practice their blending and segmenting of different words.

In class we are currently on Phase 4 of the Letters and Sounds programme and after Christmas we will be moving on to Phase 5. It would be excellent help, and practice for your child if you were to engage with some of the following resources with them after school and during the Christmas holidays.

PhonicsPlay is really useful to help practice your child's segmenting and blending of words. If you find they are struggling with some of the words in Phase 4 our advice would be to go on to the Phase 3 section.

Another excellent and engaging resource is the Alphablocks YouTube channel.

On this channel there are an assortment of videos- ones that focus on specific phonemes (such as 'a' or 's') and others that focus on blending phonemes together to read and say words. Videos like these would be very beneficial for the children to be watching over the Christmas break and across the terms.

Below is a link to the channel itself, and the videos that it would be particularly valuable to spend time watching are on the #BacktoSchool- Alphablocks Level Four playlist.

Supporting your child in phonics:

Please find a below of what all of the phonemes sound like, if you wish to assist them with practising their sounds.
