History

History Intent

At St Teresa’s, we intend for our children to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim to create enthusiastic and inquisitive historians who are able to make links between the past and the world we know today. Throughout their journey through the ages, we will encourage our children to become active, independent and confident learners.

Our exciting History topics aim to inspire our children's curiosity to know more about the past – locally, nationally and around the world. We want to give numerous opportunities to immerse them within different cultures, countries and communities of the past. We will achieve this through trips to local areas of interest, drama and with the access to historical artefacts.

It is important to become a historian, to understand concepts such as chronology, continuity and change, cause and consequence and similarity and contrast. As our children progress through the year groups, they will be encouraged to develop historical enquiry skills, critical thinking and build on knowledge gained from previous years. We will encourage them to think both carefully and critically as they develop the capability to question historical events by understanding historical evidence can be told from several viewpoints and therefore interpretations may differ.

As their historical knowledge gains momentum, we will help them build upon and improve their critical thinking, research and enquiry skills until our children are confident and successful young historians.
